How to install a printer cartridge

This is a general guide offered from Canon, HP, Brother and Epson Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) of printer ink cartridges.  

Canon ink cartridges: 

1. When you remove the cartridge from its packaging do not touch the electrical contacts and joint.

2. Do not open the ink tank until you are ready to use it promptly install the ink tank.

3. Refer to the user’s manual of the printer for information on how to install the ink tank in the printer for information on how to install the ink tank in the printer and for other precautions.

4. To obtain the best print quality, use up all ink within 6 months after opening. It is not recommended to modify or disassemble the ink as it may result in ink leakage, which may cause damage to the printer.

5. Store in a location out of reach of children.

6. In order to prevent ink residue staining please place the used ink into a bag, straight after removing from the printer.

HP ink cartridges:  

What are SET-UP ink cartridges?  SET-UP ink are used to install a new HP printer or printhead and supply ink for the first series of your print jobs. They are specially designed to initialise a printer and calibrate ink levels. Unlike replacement ink cartridge, SET-UP ink cartridge cannot be purchased from retailers and are available only in the printer box. When a SET-UP ink cartridge is depleted, purchase and use normal ink cartridge that matches your printer model to continue printing.  If the printer comes with SET-UP ink cartridges you must install them first when setting up your printer.

Open the ink cartridge door, and then wait for the cartridge to move to the centre of the product. Press down lightly on the ink cartridge that you want to replace to release it, and then pull it toward you out of its slot.

Remove one of the new cartridge from its packaging. We recommend that you only use genuine HP ink cartridges for reasons listed on our other posts warning consumers of the pitfalls in using generic cartridges if shopping for  cheap ink cartridges online in Australia.

How do I replace the ink cartridge?

  1. Open the ink cartridge cover. If one or more ink cartridges are empty, for example Black, the LCD shows ink empty Black and replace ink.
  2. Pull the lock release lever down and take out the ink cartridge for the colour shown on the on the LCD.
  3. Open required ink and remove protective yellow cap.
  4. Each color has its own correct position.
  5. Lift each lock release lever and gently push it until it licks, and then close the ink cartridge cover.
  6. The machine will automatically reset the ink dot counter.
  7. Do not take out ink cartridge if you do not need to replace them. If you do so, it may reduce the ink quality and the machine will not know the quantity of ink left in the cartridge.
  8. If you mix the colours by installing an ink cartridge in the wrong position, clear the printhead several times after correcting the cartridge installation.
  9. Once you open an ink cartridge, install it in the machine and use it up within 6 months of installation. Use unopened ink cartridge by the expiration date written on the cartridge package.
  10. Do not dismantle or tamper with the ink cartridge.
  11. Brother strongly strongly recommends that you do not refill the ink cartridges provided with your machine. We also recommend that you continue to use only Genuine Brother Brand replacement ink cartridges. Use or attempted use of potentially incompatible ink and/ or cartridges in the Brother machine may cause damage to the machine and may result in unsatisfactory print quality. Brother Warranty coverage does not apply to any problem that is caused by the use of unauthorised third party ink and/ or cartridges.

Epson Ink cartridges:

Removing and Installing Ink Cartridges:

Make sure you have your replacement cartridge handy before you begin. You must install new cartridges immediately after removing the old ones.

Caution: Leave your old cartridges in the printer until you are ready to replace them to prevent the print head nozzles from drying out. Do not open ink cartridge until you are ready to install the ink. Cartridges are vacuum packed to maintain reliability.

  1. Turn on your product.
  2. Lift up the scanner unit.
  3. Caution: do not move the print head by hand; otherwise, you may damage your product.
  4. Press the stop button.
  5. Squeeze the tab on the cartridge and lift cartridge straight up to remove it.
  6. Before opening the new cartridge package, shake it gently 4 to 5 times. Do not shake the cartridge after opening the packages, or it may leak.
  7. Remove the yellow tape from the side of the cartridge. Do not remove any other labels or seals or ink will leak.
  8. Insert new cartridge into the holder and push it down until it clicks into place.
  9. Lower the scanner unit.
  10. Press the stop button. The printhead moves to its home position and the printer starts charging the ink. This takes about 1.5 minutes. When the power light stops flashing and remains on, ink charging is finished.
  11. If you remove a low or expended ink cartridge you cannot re-install and use the cartridge.
